P2796 indicates that the transmission control module (TCM) has detected an open circuit or electrical fault in the control circuit for the electric or auxiliary transmission fluid pump, which is used to maintain fluid pressure when the engine is not running or to supplement lubrication. The TCM monitors the circuit for expected voltage or current and sets this code when the signal is outside the normal range, often disabling the pump and illuminating the warning light.
