P1588 · ChryslerCruise Control Clutch Control Circuit High

P1588 on Chrysler vehicles indicates the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected a high voltage condition on the cruise control clutch control circuit, which is the electrical path that tells the PCM whether the clutch pedal is depressed. The PCM expects a specific voltage range on this circuit and sets the code when the signal exceeds that range, typically because the circuit is open, shorted to voltage, or the switch is faulty.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Cruise control may not engage or may disengage unexpectedly when the clutch pedal is pressed
  • The cruise control indicator light may flash or fail to illuminate
  • Often no symptoms besides the warning light, especially if the fault is intermittent
  • On manual-transmission vehicles, the engine may not disengage cruise control when the clutch is depressed
  • Possible stored code in the PCM with no drivability complaints

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Faulty clutch pedal position switch (clutch switch) or its connector
  2. Open or high-resistance wiring in the clutch control circuit
  3. Short to voltage on the signal wire between the switch and the PCM
  4. Corroded or damaged PCM connector pins
  5. Internal PCM fault (rare but possible)
  6. Aftermarket accessories or wiring tapped into the clutch circuit

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Verify the code with a scan tool and check for any related codes in the PCM and other modules
  2. Inspect the clutch pedal switch and connector for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  3. Measure resistance and voltage on the clutch control circuit according to the factory wiring diagram
  4. Check for continuity and shorts to voltage on the signal wire from the switch to the PCM
  5. Test the clutch switch operation with a multimeter while pressing and releasing the pedal
  6. If the switch and wiring are good, check the PCM connector and perform a wiggle test on the harness
  7. Replace the faulty clutch switch or repair the wiring as needed, then clear codes and verify the repair

Clutch switch checks before PCM replacement

  • A common oversight is assuming the clutch switch is bad when the real problem is a chafed wire near the pedal assembly or a corroded connector that only acts up in damp weather.
  • The code can set intermittently and may not turn on the check engine light on some Chrysler models, so a stored code without a light is still worth diagnosing.
  • Aftermarket floor mats or pedal covers that interfere with the clutch pedal travel can cause the switch to read incorrectly and set this code.
  • Do not replace the PCM until you have verified the entire circuit, because a shorted signal wire can mimic a failed PCM and the new unit will set the same code.
  • On some vehicles, the clutch switch shares a ground with other pedals or sensors, so a bad ground can affect multiple circuits and set related codes.

Can I keep driving with P1588?

The vehicle is safe to drive because this fault primarily affects cruise control operation and does not impair engine or transmission function. Avoid using cruise control until the repair is completed, and be aware that on a manual transmission the engine may not disengage cruise control when you press the clutch, which could be dangerous in an emergency.
