P1183 · VolkswagenLinear Oxygen Sensor Reference Voltage Short To B+

P1183 on Volkswagen vehicles means the engine control module (ECM) has detected a short to battery voltage on the reference voltage circuit of a linear oxygen sensor, which is the wideband air-fuel ratio sensor. The ECM expects a stable, low reference voltage on that wire, but it is seeing battery voltage instead, so it cannot trust the sensor's signal and sets this fault.
