P02DFCylinder 10 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Max Limit

P02DF means the engine computer has learned that cylinder 10's fuel injector needs the maximum allowed correction to deliver the right amount of fuel, and it can no longer compensate any further. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors injector flow via crankshaft speed fluctuations and fuel trim, and it sets this code when the learned offset for that injector hits its calibration limit.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Illuminated check engine light, often with no other noticeable symptoms
  • A slight misfire or rough idle that may be intermittent
  • Reduced fuel economy as the engine runs richer or leaner to compensate
  • Hesitation or stumble during acceleration, especially under load
  • Possible shudder or vibration felt through the chassis at idle
  • In some cases, the engine may enter limp mode or limit power

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Clogged or partially restricted fuel injector on cylinder 10
  2. Faulty or degraded fuel injector solenoid winding
  3. Wiring harness damage or poor electrical connection at the injector
  4. Low fuel pressure or volume from a weak pump or restricted filter
  5. Intake or exhaust valve sealing problems on cylinder 10
  6. Carbon buildup on injector nozzle or combustion chamber
  7. PCM calibration issue or internal driver fault (less common)

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Connect a scan tool and record freeze-frame data and fuel trim values for cylinder 10
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the injector connector and wiring for corrosion or damage
  3. Measure injector resistance and compare to specification; check for open or shorted coil
  4. Run a fuel pressure and volume test to rule out supply-side restrictions
  5. Perform a cylinder contribution or power balance test to confirm the affected cylinder
  6. Remove and flow-test or replace the cylinder 10 injector, then clear adaptations and relearn
  7. If the injector is good, perform a compression and leak-down test to check mechanical integrity

What the offset learning limit really tells you

  • This code does not always mean the injector itself is bad; a weak fuel pump or restricted filter can cause the PCM to max out injector correction on one cylinder first.
  • A dirty injector that still flows within spec can trigger this code if its spray pattern is distorted, so flow testing is more reliable than resistance checks alone.
  • Many technicians replace the injector without checking fuel pressure, only to find the code returns because the root cause was low supply pressure.
  • The offset learning value is stored in non-volatile memory, so clearing the code without fixing the underlying issue will usually result in the code returning after a few drive cycles.
  • Cylinder 10 is often on a V10 or heavy-duty engine where access is difficult, making wiring harness chafing a common hidden cause that is missed during quick inspections.

Can I keep driving with P02DF?

You can usually drive the vehicle short distances to a repair shop, but avoid heavy acceleration, towing, or sustained high-speed driving because the engine is running with a compromised injector that can worsen and cause misfire or catalytic converter damage. If the check engine light begins flashing, stop driving and have the vehicle towed.

Guidance is general and written for all OBD-II vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
