P02DDCylinder 9 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Max Limit

P02DD means the engine control module has learned that cylinder 9's fuel injector needs the maximum allowed correction to keep the air-fuel mixture balanced, and it can no longer compensate any further. The computer detects this by monitoring crankshaft speed fluctuations and comparing the learned fuel trim offset for cylinder 9 against its stored limit.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Illuminated check engine light, often with no other noticeable symptoms
  • A subtle or pronounced misfire felt as shaking or roughness, especially at idle
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration under load
  • Slightly worse fuel economy than usual
  • Occasional hesitation or stumble during light-throttle cruising
  • On some vehicles, a message to have the engine serviced

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Clogged, restricted or failing fuel injector on cylinder 9
  2. Vacuum leak at the intake runner or gasket serving cylinder 9
  3. Faulty ignition coil or spark plug causing incomplete combustion on cylinder 9
  4. Mechanical issue such as low compression, valve sealing problem or worn camshaft lobe on cylinder 9
  5. Wiring or connector fault in the cylinder 9 injector circuit
  6. Engine control module software calibration issue or internal fault
  7. Contaminated fuel or fuel pressure problem affecting the injector's spray pattern

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data to confirm the code and check for related misfire or fuel trim codes
  2. Inspect the cylinder 9 spark plug, ignition coil and injector connector for damage, corrosion or looseness
  3. Perform a cylinder balance or injector cut-off test to verify that cylinder 9 is the weak contributor
  4. Check fuel pressure and inspect the injector for clogging; clean or replace it if flow is poor
  5. Smoke-test the intake for vacuum leaks at the cylinder 9 runner and gasket
  6. Run a compression test and, if needed, a cylinder leak-down test to rule out mechanical faults
  7. If all mechanical and electrical checks pass, check for ECM software updates or reprogramming before condemning the module

What a maxed-out injector offset really tells you

  • A maxed-out offset does not automatically mean the injector is bad; a vacuum leak or low compression on that cylinder can force the same correction.
  • Technicians often replace the injector first and find the code returns because the real cause was a leaking intake gasket or a weak ignition coil.
  • Cylinder 9 is usually on a V8 or larger engine, so confirm the firing order and cylinder numbering before testing the wrong injector.
  • A dirty mass airflow sensor or a general fuel pressure problem can skew learned offsets across several cylinders, so check global fuel trims before focusing on cylinder 9 alone.
  • Some vehicles set this code after a battery replacement or ECM reset while relearning idle, and it may clear after a proper drive cycle if no real fault exists.

Can I keep driving with P02DD?

You can usually drive the vehicle short distances to a repair shop, but avoid heavy acceleration, towing or long trips because the misfire can overheat the catalytic converter and cause further damage. If the check engine light starts flashing, stop driving and have the vehicle towed.

Guidance is general and written for all OBD-II vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
