P1502 · ChryslerTheft Deterrent System No Password Received

P1502 on a Chrysler vehicle means the engine controller did not receive the expected password from the theft deterrent system, so it refuses to allow the engine to start or run normally. The computer has detected a communication failure between the Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) during the key validation handshake.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Engine cranks but will not start, or starts and stalls immediately
  • Security light or Sentry Key indicator flashing or staying on
  • No communication with the SKIM module when scanned
  • Intermittent no-start that may resolve after several attempts
  • Often no symptoms besides the warning light if the fault is stored but not active

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Failed or unprogrammed Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM)
  2. Broken, corroded or shorted communication wire between SKIM and PCM
  3. PCM not properly programmed or internal communication fault
  4. Ignition key transponder not recognized due to wrong key or damaged chip
  5. Poor ground connection at the SKIM or PCM
  6. Blown fuse feeding the SKIM module

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Scan all modules for communication codes and verify the SKIM responds
  2. Check the SKIM fuse and inspect the module connector for corrosion or loose pins
  3. Test the communication bus wire between SKIM and PCM for continuity and shorts
  4. Verify the ignition key is the correct programmed Sentry Key for the vehicle
  5. Perform a key relearn procedure with a capable scan tool if the SKIM is functional
  6. Replace and program the SKIM module if it fails to communicate or store keys
  7. Check PCM programming and replace only after all wiring and SKIM tests pass

Why the SKIM password handshake fails

  • A weak or dead battery can cause a temporary P1502 because the SKIM loses its memory or the handshake is interrupted during cranking.
  • Aftermarket remote starters and alarm systems frequently tap into the SKIM data line and cause this code even when the factory modules are healthy.
  • A key that starts the car but has a damaged transponder coil can still set P1502 intermittently because the SKIM reads the key only some of the time.
  • Technicians sometimes replace the PCM when the real fault is a chafed wire in the steering column harness near the ignition switch.
  • P1502 can be stored as a history code after a dead battery or module replacement and may not indicate a current no-start condition.

Can I keep driving with P1502?

If the engine starts and runs normally, the code may be a stored history fault and short trips to a shop are acceptable. If the engine cranks but will not start, do not keep cranking repeatedly because you risk flooding the engine and draining the battery; have the vehicle towed or diagnosed on site.

Guidance is general and written for Chrysler vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
