P1389 · ChryslerNo Auto Shutdown (ASD) Relay Output Voltage At PCM

P1389 means the powertrain control module (PCM) commanded the auto shutdown (ASD) relay on but did not see the expected voltage return on its ASD output sense circuit. The PCM uses that feedback to confirm the relay actually closed and is feeding power to the ignition coil, fuel injectors and fuel pump on Chrysler vehicles.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Engine cranks but will not start, or starts then stalls immediately
  • No fuel pump prime or injector pulse during cranking
  • Stalling while driving with a sudden loss of power
  • Often no symptoms besides the warning light if the fault is intermittent
  • Multiple misfire or injector circuit codes stored alongside P1389
  • Dead ignition coil and fuel pump circuits when the key is turned on

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Failed or sticking auto shutdown (ASD) relay in the power distribution center
  2. Blown ASD relay fuse or corroded fuse terminal in the power distribution center
  3. Open or high-resistance ASD output wire between the relay and the PCM sense pin
  4. Corroded or loose ground at the PCM or at the ASD relay socket
  5. Faulty PCM driver or sense circuit inside the powertrain control module
  6. Damaged wiring harness near the relay box or engine, often from heat or rodent damage

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Scan all modules and record every stored code before clearing anything, then check the ASD relay fuse and swap the relay with an identical known-good one
  2. Verify battery voltage at the ASD relay socket with the key on and confirm the PCM ground trigger at the relay coil
  3. Back-probe the ASD output sense wire at the PCM connector and compare it with the voltage at the relay output while cranking
  4. Inspect the harness from the power distribution center to the PCM for chafing, heat damage and corrosion, and load-test suspect wires
  5. Check PCM ground straps and clean the ground points at the engine and body
  6. If the relay, fuse, wiring and grounds all test good but the PCM never sees output voltage, test the PCM on a bench or substitute a known-good unit
  7. Clear codes and run a full drive cycle to confirm P1389 does not return before releasing the vehicle

Why the ASD relay is not always the culprit

  • A failed ASD relay is the most common cause, but a blown fuse or a corroded fuse terminal in the power distribution center will set P1389 just as easily and is often overlooked.
  • The PCM checks voltage on its own ASD output sense pin, so an open sense wire or a bad PCM ground can set this code even when the relay is closing and feeding the engine perfectly.
  • On many Chrysler models the ASD relay also powers the fuel pump and ignition coil, so a no-start with no fuel pump prime points here before you suspect the pump itself.
  • An intermittent P1389 that only appears on rough roads usually means a chafed harness or a loose relay socket terminal rather than a failing PCM.
  • Do not replace the PCM until the relay, fuse, wiring and grounds have been load-tested, because a misdiagnosed PCM replacement is an expensive way to leave the real fault in place.

Can I keep driving with P1389?

Do not drive the vehicle with an active P1389 because the engine can shut down without warning and leave you stranded or cause a loss of power steering and braking assist. If the engine starts and runs normally and the code is intermittent, drive only to a safe repair location and avoid heavy traffic and high-speed roads.

Guidance is general and written for Chrysler vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
