U0507Invalid Data Received From Folding Top Control Module

U0507 is a communication fault where the vehicle's main computer modules receive invalid or missing data from the Folding Top Control Module, which manages the convertible roof or retractable hardtop. The computer detects that the messages from this module are either absent, corrupted, or outside the expected format, so it flags the module as unreliable.

Symptoms you may notice

  • The convertible top may not operate at all, or may move only partially and then stop.
  • A warning light or message on the dashboard indicating a top or roof system fault.
  • The top may operate erratically, such as reversing direction mid-cycle or refusing to latch.
  • Other unrelated warning lights may appear if the folding top module shares a communication bus with other systems.
  • Often no symptoms besides the warning light, especially if the fault is intermittent.

Common causes, most likely first

  1. A weak or failing battery, or poor battery connections, causing low voltage to the folding top module.
  2. Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring and connectors at the folding top module or along its communication bus.
  3. A faulty folding top control module itself, due to internal electronics failure or water intrusion.
  4. A problem with the communication network (CAN bus) wiring, such as a short to ground or between bus lines.
  5. A malfunctioning component within the folding top system (motor, latch, position sensor) that causes the module to send invalid data.
  6. Software or configuration mismatch in the folding top module after a replacement or battery disconnect.

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Perform a battery and charging system test, including checking battery voltage and connections, and recharge or replace the battery if needed.
  2. Inspect the folding top module connectors and wiring for corrosion, looseness, or damage, and clean or repair as necessary.
  3. Use a scan tool to read all codes and live data from the folding top module, and check for communication errors on the bus.
  4. Check the communication bus wiring for continuity, shorts, and proper resistance, following the manufacturer's diagnostic procedures.
  5. Test the folding top system components (motors, latches, sensors) for proper operation and replace any faulty parts.
  6. If all else checks out, reprogram or replace the folding top control module, then perform any required calibration or initialization.

Don't Replace the Top Module Yet

  • A low or failing battery is a very common cause of U0507 because the folding top module may not initialize properly or may send corrupted data when voltage is low.
  • Water leaks into the trunk or roof area often corrode the folding top module connectors, leading to invalid data without any obvious top malfunction.
  • The code can be set by a problem with another module on the same communication bus, so diagnosing only the folding top module may miss the real fault.
  • After replacing or disconnecting the folding top module, a relearn or calibration procedure is often required; skipping it can cause U0507 to return immediately.
  • Intermittent U0507 codes that appear only in cold or wet weather often point to a wiring harness issue rather than a failed module.

Can I keep driving with U0507?

You can generally drive the vehicle if the top is closed and secured, but avoid operating the folding top until the fault is repaired to prevent damage or a stuck roof. If the top is open or partially open, do not drive at speed and seek repair promptly.

Guidance is general and written for all OBD-II vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
