P2A71 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an out-of-range condition in the hydraulic fuel pump select valve control circuit for an alternative fuel system. The PCM monitors the valve's electrical command and feedback; when the actual response does not match the expected range for a calibrated time, it stores this code and illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
