P0731Gear 1 Incorrect Ratio

P0731 means the transmission control module (TCM) commanded first gear but the actual gear ratio calculated from the input and output speed sensors did not match the expected value for first gear. The computer detected a mismatch between the speed of the transmission input shaft and the output shaft, indicating slip or an incorrect engagement in first gear.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Illumination of the check engine light or transmission warning light, often with no other noticeable symptoms
  • Harsh or delayed engagement when shifting into drive or reverse
  • The transmission may slip or hesitate when accelerating from a stop
  • The vehicle may enter limp mode, staying in a single gear or refusing to shift
  • Abnormal engine RPM flare during acceleration from a standstill
  • Poor fuel economy or unusual transmission noise during first-gear operation

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Low or contaminated transmission fluid, often due to a leak or overdue service
  2. Faulty input or output speed sensor, or damaged wiring to either sensor
  3. Sticking or failing shift solenoid, particularly the solenoid responsible for first gear
  4. Internal transmission mechanical wear, such as a slipping clutch pack or brake band
  5. Valve body wear or a stuck valve preventing proper hydraulic pressure for first gear
  6. A faulty transmission control module (TCM) or corrupted adaptive learning values
  7. Restricted transmission filter or cooler lines reducing fluid flow and pressure

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Check transmission fluid level and condition; top off or replace fluid and filter if contaminated or low
  2. Inspect and test the input and output speed sensors and their wiring for damage or corrosion
  3. Use a scan tool to read live data and compare commanded gear ratio with actual ratio during a test drive
  4. Test the shift solenoids for electrical resistance and proper operation, replacing any that fail
  5. Perform a transmission adaptive learning reset and relearn procedure if the TCM supports it
  6. Inspect the valve body for sticking valves or debris, and clean or rebuild as necessary
  7. If internal mechanical damage is suspected, remove and disassemble the transmission for inspection and repair

What P0731 really tells you about first gear

  • A P0731 can be set by a simple low-fluid condition that causes the first-gear clutch pack to slip under load, so always verify fluid level and condition before condemning internal parts.
  • The code does not always mean the transmission is mechanically failed; a dirty or failing mass airflow sensor or engine performance issue can alter torque delivery and trigger a ratio error.
  • Some vehicles use a single speed sensor for both input and output, and a failing sensor can produce a P0731 without any other transmission codes, so sensor testing is critical.
  • After repairs, many TCMs require a relearn or adaptive reset procedure; skipping this step can cause the code to return even though the physical repair was successful.
  • A restricted transmission filter can cause pressure drops that affect only first gear because it demands the highest fluid volume, leading to a ratio error that disappears after filter replacement.

Can I keep driving with P0731?

Driving with P0731 is not recommended because the transmission may slip, overheat, or fail completely, leading to loss of motive power. If you must move the vehicle, drive slowly and avoid heavy acceleration or towing, and have it diagnosed promptly.

Guidance is general and written for all OBD-II vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
