P02F3Cylinder 6 Injector Circuit Range/Performance

P02F3 indicates that the powertrain control module (PCM) has detected an abnormal condition in the electrical circuit for the fuel injector on cylinder 6, such as a short to power, short to ground, or an open circuit. The PCM monitors injector current and response time, and when the signal falls outside the expected range for a calibrated period, it stores this range/performance code.

Symptoms you may notice

  • Illumination of the check engine light, often with no other noticeable symptoms
  • Rough idle or misfire that may be more pronounced when the engine is cold
  • Noticeable loss of power or hesitation during acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption due to incomplete combustion in cylinder 6
  • Possible fuel odor or black smoke from the exhaust if the injector is stuck open
  • In severe cases, the engine may enter limp mode to protect the catalytic converter

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Faulty fuel injector on cylinder 6 (coil winding open or shorted, or mechanically stuck)
  2. Damaged or corroded electrical connector at the cylinder 6 injector
  3. Chafed, broken, or shorted wiring in the injector harness near the cylinder 6 injector
  4. Poor connection or corrosion at the PCM connector affecting the injector driver circuit
  5. Internal PCM driver failure for the cylinder 6 injector circuit
  6. Contamination or clogging of the injector causing abnormal current draw
  7. Aftermarket or incorrect injector installed that does not match the PCM calibration

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Inspect the cylinder 6 injector connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins; repair as needed
  2. Measure the resistance of the cylinder 6 injector with a multimeter and compare to the manufacturer's specification
  3. Perform a voltage drop test on the injector power and ground circuits while cranking or running to check for excessive resistance
  4. Use a noid light or oscilloscope to verify that the PCM is commanding the injector and that the pulse width is correct
  5. Swap the cylinder 6 injector with a known-good injector from another cylinder and see if the code moves
  6. Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for the PCM that may address injector driver issues
  7. If all electrical checks pass, replace the cylinder 6 injector and clear the code, then verify the repair with a road test

Don't overlook the injector harness

  • A common oversight is assuming the injector itself is faulty when the real problem is a chafed wire in the harness where it rubs against the intake manifold or engine lifting eye.
  • The PCM may set P02F3 even when the injector is functioning correctly if the electrical circuit has excessive resistance from corroded terminals, which can mimic a failing injector.
  • On some vehicles, a weak battery or charging system issue can cause voltage spikes that disrupt injector driver operation and trigger this code without any hard fault in the injector circuit.
  • A stuck-open injector can cause hydro-lock and catalytic converter damage, so diagnosing P02F3 promptly is more critical than with other injector circuit codes.
  • After replacing an injector, always perform a bidirectional scan tool reset or relearn procedure if required, because some PCMs need to adapt to the new injector's characteristics.

Can I keep driving with P02F3?

It is generally safe to drive with P02F3 for a short distance to a repair shop, but avoid heavy acceleration or towing because a misfiring cylinder can overheat the catalytic converter. If the engine is running very rough or flashing the check engine light, stop driving and have the vehicle towed to prevent further damage.

Guidance is general and written for all OBD-II vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
