C0025ABS Pump Motor Stalled

C0025 means the anti-lock braking system (ABS) control module commanded the hydraulic pump motor to run but did not see the expected motor current or pump pressure response within a set time. The module has detected that the pump motor is stalled, seized, or electrically disconnected, so it disables ABS function and turns on the warning light.

Symptoms you may notice

  • ABS warning light illuminated steadily on the dashboard
  • Traction control and stability control warning lights may also be on because those systems share the pump
  • Often no symptoms besides the warning light, with normal base braking still available
  • A whirring or humming noise from the engine bay when the pump is commanded during a self-test may be absent
  • Pedal may feel slightly different during hard braking because ABS is disabled
  • In some vehicles a chime or message center warning appears at startup

Common causes, most likely first

  1. ABS pump motor seized or internally worn, preventing rotation
  2. Blown fuse or open circuit in the pump motor power or ground circuit
  3. Corroded, loose, or damaged pump motor connector or harness
  4. Failed ABS pump motor relay that does not supply power when commanded
  5. Faulty ABS control module driver circuit that cannot power the motor
  6. Low brake fluid or air in the hydraulic system causing the pump to run dry or against a blockage
  7. Debris or contamination in the hydraulic unit jamming the pump mechanism

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Scan all modules for codes and record freeze-frame data to confirm C0025 is current and not history
  2. Check the ABS pump motor fuse and relay, then verify battery voltage and ground at the pump motor connector
  3. Inspect the pump motor harness and connector for corrosion, chafing, or loose pins and repair as needed
  4. Command the pump motor with a scan tool and listen for operation while watching motor current on live data
  5. Perform a voltage drop test on the pump motor power and ground circuits under load to find resistance
  6. If electrical circuits are good, remove and bench-test the pump motor or replace the hydraulic unit as required
  7. After repair, clear codes, perform the ABS self-test, and verify no codes return during a road test

What a stalled ABS pump really means

  • A pump motor that spins freely on the bench but fails in the car often points to a weak relay or high-resistance ground rather than a bad motor.
  • The ABS module may set C0025 when the pump runs but builds no pressure, so a hydraulic restriction or low fluid can mimic an electrical motor failure.
  • Some vehicles only run the pump during an active ABS event or self-test, so the fault may not appear until the scan tool commands the pump.
  • A corroded ground strap on the ABS hydraulic unit is a commonly missed cause that produces a stalled motor code with no obvious wiring damage.
  • Replacing the pump motor without checking the module driver circuit can lead to a repeat failure if the module is not supplying proper current.

Can I keep driving with C0025?

You can usually drive the vehicle with normal base brakes, but ABS and traction control are disabled, so avoid hard braking, slippery surfaces, and towing until repaired. If the brake pedal feels soft or the warning light is accompanied by a red brake warning, stop driving and have the vehicle towed.

Guidance is general and written for all OBD-II vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
