C0016Right Front Hydraulic Release Too Long

C0016 means the antilock brake system (ABS) control module commanded the right front hydraulic release valve to open and bleed pressure, but the expected pressure drop did not occur within the programmed time window. The module monitors release-valve response through wheel-speed and pressure behavior and flags the circuit when the right front brake stays applied longer than allowed.

Symptoms you may notice

  • ABS warning light illuminated steadily on the dashboard
  • Traction control or stability control warning light also on in many vehicles
  • Often no symptoms besides the warning light during normal driving
  • Right front wheel may drag or feel hot after a stop, especially after ABS activation
  • Pulsing or uneven braking, or a pull to the right, during hard stops
  • ABS disabled, so the wheel can lock under panic braking

Common causes, most likely first

  1. Sticking or contaminated right front hydraulic release solenoid valve inside the ABS modulator
  2. Restricted or collapsed right front brake hose trapping pressure at the caliper
  3. Seized right front caliper piston or corroded caliper slide pins preventing release
  4. Debris or corrosion in the brake fluid blocking the release passage in the modulator
  5. Faulty ABS wheel-speed sensor signal on the right front causing the module to misjudge release timing
  6. Damaged wiring or corroded connector at the right front release solenoid circuit
  7. Internal ABS module fault misreporting valve response

How to diagnose and fix it

  1. Scan all modules and record freeze-frame data for C0016, then clear the code and verify whether it returns
  2. Inspect the right front brake hose, caliper, pads and slide pins for drag or restricted release
  3. Check brake fluid condition and level, and look for contamination or moisture in the reservoir
  4. Test the right front release solenoid circuit for power, ground and resistance at the ABS module connector
  5. Compare right front and left front wheel-speed signals on a road test to rule out sensor error
  6. Perform an ABS bleed and actuator test with a capable scan tool to exercise the release valve
  7. Replace the ABS modulator or module only after electrical and hydraulic checks confirm an internal valve fault

What the release valve test really checks

  • A dragging right front caliper or collapsed hose can mimic an internal ABS valve fault, so always inspect the hydraulic corner before condemning the modulator.
  • The code is set by release timing logic, not by a direct pressure sensor on most systems, so a weak wheel-speed signal can produce a false release-too-long call.
  • Contaminated brake fluid is a common root cause because debris settles in the modulator valve passages and slows release response.
  • Some vehicles store C0016 only after an ABS stop or actuator test, so a clean scan after normal driving does not prove the fault is gone.
  • Replacing the ABS module without flushing the hydraulic system can leave debris that repeats the failure on the new unit.

Can I keep driving with C0016?

The vehicle remains driveable with normal braking in most cases, but ABS is disabled and a dragging right front brake can overheat and pull the car. Keep speeds low, avoid hard stops, and inspect the right front wheel for heat or drag before any extended driving.

Guidance is general and written for all OBD-II vehicles. Exact tests and values vary by model, so confirm the fault before replacing parts.
